About

2021/22 Yukon Comp Team

The Comp Team is the highest level of training for Yukon snowboarders and is comprised of two groups — Freeriders and High Performance. The program includes dryland training as well as on-snow sessions. The majority of training takes place in Whitehorse, complemented by trips outside Yukon for competitions and exposure to additional terrain.

The Comp Team is a skill-based program, based on Stage 4 of Canada Snowboard’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) pathway.

Athletes must be approved by the Head Coach to join the Yukon Comp Team

COVID-19 and Program Fees Pandemic Refund Policy

As uncertainty persists around COVID-19, programs will continue to follow protocols mandated by the Government of Yukon and Canada Snowboard. Details will be shared as training begins.

For the 2021/22 season Snowboard Yukon (SY) will continue to offer a program fees refund if a program has been suspended due to COVID-19. If this occurs SY will provide a fees refund based on the remaining percentage of the program in progress to the participant. This refund will not cover interruptions to SY programs based on weather, or other non-COVID-19 related issues. The refund does not include membership fees.

Freeriders Program (FULL)

The Freeriders group is a new addition to the Yukon Comp Team. Freeriders is a coached program for Yukon snowboarders who are not quite ready for the focus and commitment of the High Performance team and those who want to continue to progress their riding, but at their own pace. The Freeriders will work on all aspects of snowboarding including jumps, rail, snowboardcross and all mountain riding.

Travel, competitions and dryland training are not mandatory at this level, however Freeriders have the ability to customize their training plan by adding some of these programs to their season on an a la carte basis.

Required Skill Level:

To join Freeriders you need to have a solid snowboard skill set such as good carving on advanced (black) runs and the ability to safely navigate intermediate (blue) freestyle terrain, (e.g. Coyote Park at Mt. Sima), although it’s ok if you want to skip a feature or two. The Head Coach can let you know if this program is the right fit for you.

The base Freeriders coached program includes:
  • 10 on-snow sessions at Mt. Sima

When: Saturdays, Dec 4, 11, Jan 8, 15, 22, 19, Feb 5, 12, 19, 26
Time: 12:00 – 3:00 pm
Where: Mt. Sima
Base fee: $350

Fees do not include: Compete Membership, flights & accommodation, competition entry fees, lift tickets, snowboard, helmet.

High Performance Program

The High Performance program of the Comp Team is designed for Yukon snowboarders who are committed to achieving their highest level of performance. They have their sights set on Provincial and National competitions, as well as the Canada Winter Games and a career in snowboarding beyond the next few years.

Required Skill Level and Focus:

Participation in the High Performance program is primarily based on athlete focus and a commitment to training, however a base snowboard skill set is required to ensure you can safely participate in competitions outside of the Yukon. The Head Coach will assess your skills, but as a baseline you should be comfortable and safe on intermediate (blue) freestyle terrain, (e.g. Coyote Park at Mt. Sima), and have solid carving skills on advanced (black) runs in most conditions.
